MASTER of the Life of the Virgin The Virgin of Mercy china oil painting reproduction

The Virgin of Mercy
1480 Tempera on oak panel, 129,5 x 65,5 cm Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest The picture is of calm, monumental simplicity, a good painter's achievement demonstrating great skill; despite the few colours the picture does not look empty or poor. The abundance of whites brings into pleasing relief the Virgin's slender, green-clad figure giving a Gothic S-curve against the crimson curtain of the background; the mantle hanging from her shoulders serves as a beautiful symbol of patronage. The isolation of the scene from the background and consequently from the whole world, the very emphasis laid on the motive, are typical of the conservative tendencies of Cologne art which nevertheless welcomed the good opportunity for representing a piece of splendid Italian brocade. The heads deserve special notice; the tender glance of the Virgin and the sweet face of the Child, chiefly because the latter looks amazingly, precociously clever for his age. The looks of the Carmelite monks kneeling to the Virgin reflect clearly discernible intellectual activity. Most probably all the six figures are portraits, as suggested by the careful delineation of features mirroring fine shades of differences. The figure whose head is covered may have been the superior of the small company of friars; this assumption is supported by his distinguished position - in the immediate proximity, to the right of the Virgin Mary - as well as by his cap.Artist:MASTER of the Life of the Virgin Title: The Virgin of Mercy Painted in 1451-1500 , German - - painting : religious

     Artist: BRAMANTINO
BRAMANTINO Crucifixion china oil painting reproduction

Crucifixion
1515 Oil on canvas, 372 x 270 cm Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan This painting may have come from the church of S. Maria di Brera. At one time it was probably an organ shutter. It was formerly attributed to Bramante. A late work, this painting reveals Bramantino's background. His roots were in the art of Ercole de' Roberti, the most energetically emotional fifteenth- century painter in northern Italy. It is from this source that Bramantino drew his highly dramatic style, which led him to freeze the tragedy of the Crucifixion within a framework of lucid abstraction. At the same time he seized the opportunity to seek out new means of formal expression. The crosses of the two thieves are arranged in terms of a centralized perspective, creating a space almost like an interior, and leading directly to the background where typical Bramantino buildings are silhouetted against an evening sky. (One of the buildings resembles the Trivulzio mausoleum, which was designed by the artist.) The marked bisymmetry of the painting, with angel and demon, sun and moon, is less structured in the choral rhythm of the foreground. The Madonna's grief is represented within the circle described by the hands of the saints, while the Magdalene lifts her arms toward the cross as if to raise it up to heaven. A strict intellectual approach dominates the colour scheme, in which subdued olive greens, golden grays and browns predominate.Artist:BRAMANTINO Title: Crucifixion Painted in 1451-1500 , Italian - - painting : religious

MASTER of San Francesco Bardi Crucifix with china oil painting reproduction

Crucifix with
247 x 200 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence This Cross follows the Byzantine iconographic formula for the 'Christus patiens'. There is a Byzantine influence also in the style, which is, however, basically Western in its dramatic vigour. Referred by some critics to the Florentine school, it more probably is a work by the painter of the panel with St Francis and scenes of his life in the church of Santa Croce at Florence (Cappella Bardi). This master interprets with a new, passionate vigour the schemes given by the Lucchese Bonaventura Berlinguieri in his St Francis at Pescia.Artist:MASTER of San Francesco Bardi Title: Crucifix with scenes from Calvary Painted in 1251-1300 , Italian - - painting : religious

PERUGINO, Pietro Baptism of Christ china oil painting reproduction

Baptism of Christ
1482 Fresco, 335 x 540 cm Cappella Sistina, Vatican The fresco is from the cycle of the life of Christ in the Sistine Chapel. It was painted by Perugino and Pinturicchio, the latter being probably responsible for the landscape and minor scenes. The paintings were to be read in pairs, one from the left and one from the right. Thus the Baptism of Christ faces the Circumcision of Moses' son by Perugino and Pinturicchio. A comparison of the pairs of scenes shows clearly that the principal concern was to show how the new religion of Christ was deeper and more spiritual than the Jewish religion. Thus the pair of frescoes showing the Baptism and the Circumcision emphasize how baptism - prefigured, according to Augustine and many of the Fathers of Church, by circumcision - represents a "spiritual circumcision."Artist:PERUGINO, Pietro Title: Baptism of Christ Painted in 1451-1500 , Italian - - painting : religious

     Artist: Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico Scenes from the Lives of Sts Lawrence and Stephen china oil painting reproduction

Scenes from the Lives of Sts Lawrence and Stephen
1447-49 Fresco Cappella Niccolina, Palazzi Pontifici, Vatican Fra Angelico was entrusted with a number of commissions for the Vatican Palace. The one that involved the most work was the decoration of the small room in the ancient tower of Pope Innocent III that Nicholas V turned into his private chapel, a rectangular space with a groin vault. The floor installed at this time survives. It displays the emblem of Nicholas V, a radiant sun. The frescoes show scenes from the lives of Sts Stephen and Lawrence, in two horizontal bands. On the rear wall was a Deposition, also by Fra Angelico and mentioned by Vasari, but now lost. On the arches are the eight Doctors of the Church in Gothic aedicules. The Evangelists are on the vault, while on the window jambs rosettes with the head of Christ alternate with heads of patriarchs and prophets. The cycle is generally attributed to Fra Angelico and his workshop. The hand of Benozzo Gozzoli has been identified in some of the scenes from the life of St Stephen. Painted for the jubilee of 1450, the cycle clearly reveals the program pursued by Nicholas V of a link between Christian and classical culture. Fra Angelico's figures have a "Roman" appearance: they stand solemn and serious, like heroes from antiquity, against a background of theatrical architecture, reminding the beholder of the buildings of ancient Rome. The intention was to underline the continuity between imperial and Christian Rome which the pope wished to assert. In the picture shown in the upper register St Stephen is depicted preaching to the people and the scholars. Below this St Lawrence is shown receiving the church's treasury and distributing it to the poor.Artist:ANGELICO, Fra Title: Scenes from the Lives of Sts Lawrence and Stephen Painted in 1401-1450 , Italian - - painting : religious
